MEET THE MÖTHs: KATAGYAL

MEET THE MÖTHs: KATAGYAL

Q: Who are you? In a short sentence, give us a little summary of who you are and what you present to this world (as a DJ or more)!

KATAGYAL: I'm KATAGYAL - on a mission to spread music that makes you pull a stank face. I love to celebrate the diversity of Black music and culture, whether that's through DJing, singing, playing instruments or other art forms.

Q: What inspired you to become a DJ and what keeps you going now? What is your drive?

KATAGYAL: The moment that did it for me was when I discovered Gqom DJs in my teens. I was so blown away by the energy and this dark, purely South African techno sound. Since then I've been collecting music non-stop across all sorts of genres - and now we're here. My drive comes from a few places: from leaving a mark as a dark-skinned woman in this industry, to seeing people move and feel the music during my sets... It's all extremely rewarding, and I'm just getting started.

Q: What kind of sounds attract you? When you play music or when you walk in the streets. What do you think is the root cause of that attraction?

KATAGYAL: Honestly, there are so many compelling sounds. I hear juicy chords, a nasty bass or polyrhythms and I'm in. Even better if it's all together. I think syncopation just keeps the energy high regardless of the genre. I also love unusual harmonies, scales or progressions, and songs that catch you off guard. There's just so much to discover, and also to create. Like when I hear a random object like a washing machine make a sick beat, I'll most definitely add something to it.

Q: What does MÖTH AGENCY symbolise for you? What made you join, and what do you hope it brings to the community in Hong Kong?

KATAGYAL: A breath of fresh air. It's a real power move for us to get together, to create inclusive and safe spaces and push for more unconventional sounds in Hong Kong. We most definitely need more of that in this city. MÖTH is here to enable that and I love to be a part of it.

Q: What is your favourite moth species? Explain why you identify with that moth!

KATAGYAL: The Comet moth, aka the Argema mittrei. Its' long tail makes it look like it's dancing and that's exactly what I wanna make people do when I spin tunes.
